I Am Not Walking Alone

A reflection for the Feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael.

There are seasons of life when even a full house can feel lonely. We can be surrounded by people we love and still carry worries that feel deeply personal: concerns for our children, decisions about the future, questions about family, or fears we do not always know how to explain.

On the feast of Saints Michael, Gabriel, and Raphael, I am reminded that God’s care is much larger than what I can see. The archangels remind me that heaven is not distant or unconcerned, and that God is always at work in ways I may not recognize.

St. Michael reminds me that there are battles I cannot fight by myself. I can pray, protect, teach, and do my best, but I am not strong enough to control every danger or solve every problem. His presence points me back to God, who is stronger than anything that frightens me.

St. Gabriel reminds me that God sometimes speaks into our lives in ways that change our plans. Mary did not receive a simple or comfortable message, but she received the grace to say yes. I think of all the times life has asked me to trust before I felt ready, and I am reminded that God does not call us without also giving us the grace we need.

St. Raphael reminds me of the quiet ways God accompanies us on the road. In the Book of Tobit, Raphael walks beside Tobias before Tobias fully understands who he is. That makes me wonder how many times God has already sent help into my life through a person, a conversation, an unexpected kindness, or a door that opened at the right moment.

So much of faith requires trusting what we cannot see.

I cannot always see how God is protecting my family. I cannot always see where He is leading us, or how a difficult situation may one day make sense. I cannot always see the help He is sending.

But not seeing is not the same as being alone.

That is one of the comforts I find in this feast. The Church reminds us that God’s creation is more mysterious and more beautiful than what our eyes can measure. There is a whole spiritual reality surrounding us, and at the center of it all is a God who knows us, loves us, and does not abandon us.

As a mother, I often want to be the one who makes everything safe. I want to know that my children will be protected, that the people I love will be well, and that the choices we make will lead where they should.

But I cannot promise any of that.

What I can do is entrust them to God. I can ask St. Michael to defend them, St. Gabriel to help them listen for God’s voice, and St. Raphael to accompany them wherever their journeys may lead.

And perhaps I need those prayers for myself just as much.

I need courage when I am afraid, openness when God’s plans surprise me, and trust when the road ahead is unclear. I need to remember that I do not have to understand everything in order to believe that God is present.

Perhaps faith is not always seeing who walks beside me. Perhaps it is trusting the God who never sends me on the journey alone.

Saint Michael, protect us. Saint Gabriel, help us hear and answer God’s call. Saint Raphael, guide and accompany us on the road. And Lord, when I cannot see what You are doing, give me the grace to trust that I am never walking alone. Amen.
