God Hears the Prayer of the Destitute

A reflection on Psalm 102 for Thursday of the 15th Week in Ordinary Time Year 2

There are moments in life when we feel powerless. We may be facing illness, financial worries, family separation, immigration concerns, or problems that seem too heavy for us to solve. In those moments, it can feel as though no one fully understands what we are carrying.

Psalm 102 gives us comfort because it reminds us that God hears the prayer of the destitute. He does not turn away from those who feel forgotten, afraid, or without help. The world may overlook them, but God does not.

Sometimes our prayers are not long or beautiful. They may be only tears, a tired sigh, or the simple words, “Lord, help us.” God receives these prayers with love. He knows the fears we cannot explain and the burdens we do not share with anyone else.

This psalm also reminds us that God’s mercy is not limited to one moment or one generation. His name endures forever. He remains faithful even when our circumstances are uncertain. We may not see an immediate answer, but we can trust that our prayer has been heard.

For families living with fear or hardship, this promise is especially important. God is close to the mother worried about her children, the person waiting for medical news, the family struggling to pay bills, and those afraid of being separated from the people they love. He sees each person with compassion and dignity.

Prayer does not always remove the difficulty right away, but it keeps us from facing it alone. When we pray, we place our family, our future, and our fears into the hands of God. His hands are stronger than ours, and His mercy is greater than our worries.

Today, we can pray for all those who feel forgotten or powerless. We can also ask God to help us notice them, listen to them, and offer practical help when we are able. The Lord hears their prayers, and He may be inviting us to become part of His answer.

Lord, hear the prayers of all who are suffering. Comfort those who are afraid, protect families who are facing separation, provide for those in need, and give hope to those who feel forgotten. Help us trust in Your mercy and become instruments of Your love. Amen.
