A reflection on Luke 12:6–7 for Friday of the 28th Week in Ordinary Time.
Sometimes I know exactly what I want to say until I try to say it in English. Then I need a word I cannot find in the moment. I choose another one, but it sounds too blunt or less kind. Afterward, I wonder whether the person understood what I was trying to say. I can spend too much time thinking about a conversation that is already over.
Spanish is my first language. Speaking English takes extra attention, especially when something is important to me. I want people to hear what I mean. I do not want a missing word to decide what they think of me.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus says that not one sparrow is forgotten by God. Even the hairs of our heads are counted. That is comforting because of how specific it is. God knows details about me that I don’t even know.
I do not have to explain myself perfectly for him to understand.
That helps when I pray. Sometimes I have so much to say that I hardly know where to begin. Other times, I repeat the same concern about my family because I have no new words for it. I can pray in Spanish or English, or sit before God without managing much of either. He knows me so well that he understands me.
Jesus speaks these words to people who have worries of their own. He does not promise that being known by God will keep every bad thing from happening. I still have concerns about that. But I can be confident that God has not forgotten me.
I think of my mother, who finds English difficult to learn. I want others to give her time and listen patiently. This Gospel also makes me consider how quickly I assume I know what someone means without really listening. A little patience is a big help.
Lord, thank you for knowing me when I cannot find the words. Help me trust your care for my family and bring you my fears honestly. Give me patience with people who struggle to express themselves. Help me listen without rushing them, and remember that you know and love them too. Amen.
